How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Your Space

The perfect rug can be the final touch to any space. It adds texture, color, and a cozy aspect to any room. When arranging a room, it can be tricky to find the right rug size for your furniture. Get ready for a quick and easy guide, room by room, to rug sizing!

General Tips

  • Ideally, all four legs of the central piece of furniture should be able to fit onto the rug, or at least the front two.

  • Before buying a rug, lay out the rug size on your floor with painters tape to get a better idea of sizing in your space and placement.

  • If you want to get creative, try layering your rugs. It can add depth and texture to any space.

  • Use an indoor/outdoor rug for high traffic areas like a mudroom.

  • Don’t forget to add a rug pad / grip under your rugs to help combat sliding.

Living Room

When selecting a rug for your living room, we recommend having the front two legs of your sofa or chair overlapping your living room rug. If the room is larger, you can opt for a large rug and put all four legs of a sofa or chair on the rug. Keep in mind your rug is meant to be an accent and not a full carpet for the room. Leave around 1-2 feet of space between your rug and the walls.

Dining Room

When it comes to the dining room, we recommend choosing a rug that fits under both your table and all your dining chairs. Even with your chairs pulled out, it’s ideal to have them still remaining on the rug to prevent catching.

Bedroom

When it comes to your bedroom, it all depends on the size of your bed and the style you’re going after. If you have a queen bed, you could try styling a 5’ x 8’ rug halfway under the bed and halfway out. If you have an 8’x10’, you could place both your night stands + your queen bed over the full rug.

For a king bed, an 8’x10’ could be styled 3/4 the way under your bed or a 9’x12’ fully under the bed + nightstands. If you want to get creative, you could add a 3’x5’ rug on both sides of the bed instead.
